COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- The Coon Rapids Athletic Association is pushing a plan to construct a field house facility near the new Ice Center.

This week, CRAA president Ted Schmolke met with the City Council to discuss the plan which calls for a 79,000 square foot facility with five basketball courts. The facility could be used for other sports or community events.

Schmolke says there's currently a shortage of basketball courts in the city and many of them are too small for the older kids.

Schmolke says, "What's exciting about this is we can expand our programs and grow our programs.  When the school district shuts down for school in the summer, we don't have access to those gyms, there's no basketball in our community.  With this facility, we can play basketball, basically summer programs, fall programs, all year long and that's exciting to us."

Financing details still need to be worked out but Schmolke says the revenue generated by the facility should cover the cost of the field house.  He hopes the project can be completed in the next two years.
